Create and design a music app that will compete and differentiate itself from other music apps on the market by making it enjoyable and playful.

KPIs

  • 20+ downloads daily.
  • 500+ daily active users.
  • Content sharing done by at least 10% of users.
  • At least 60% of users connect with other users.
  • 50% daily returning users.
  • 10% Sales Conversion Rate.

Challenge

Creating a friendly, fun and playful game-like app that will draw users from other competing music apps on the market.

Research

I began my research by learning who the competition is, focusing on what they lack in regards to playfulness. I then handed a questionnaire to 32 potential users who fit the client specifications, asking them which music app they use and which mobile games attract them the most and why.

MyJam - Affinity Map

Competitors

Spotify – A Swedish Audio Streaming and Media Services Provider which in recent years has become the world’s largest and leading music streaming service provider. It also provides social interaction and connects users.
However, its social interaction feature is quite limited and is barely in use.
Moreover, Spotify lacks a playful side, and is solely aimed at providing music.

Apple Music – Apple’s Music and Video Streaming Service which provides media to Apple users.
Apple Music, like Spotify, doesn’t focus on interactions between users, and lacks playfulness in its platform.

Persona

Dorothy Jane

Age: 24
Status: Single
Occupation: Senior Mobile App Developer
Residence: Oakland, California

Dorothy is a hard working individual who lives in suburban Oakland and works in San Francisco. Her long commute to work and back by train gives her an abundance of time to spend during her daily ride. Some of that time is spent thinking about her work prospects, but most of that time is spent on her phone, searching for some digital escapism.

Dorothy loves music! She loves music trivia and other music-related games, and she loves showing-off her knowledge of music to her friends, family and other music lovers. So during her commute she listens to some music, plays online trivia games on her Mobile phone and connects with friends and family via social network apps.

Dorothy is looking for an app that will combine all three passions – love of music, love of music trivia and love of connecting with people.

MyJam is her solution.

UX Design

User flow

The user’s journey in MyJam begins with a simple yet elegant Sign Up/Sign In page. Once the user logs in, he is directed to the app homepage which lets the user choose between three options – listen to some music, play games or connect with friends.

If the user chooses to play music, he is then prompted to navigate between favorite songs, playlists, artists and albums, or simply play any music that comes to mind.

If the user chooses to play games, he is then prompted with an array of games to select from, such as: “Guitar Hero” in which the user taps on the screen in sync with a song’s beat; “Musivia” – a music trivia game in which the user selects one of his favorite artists and answers questions about the artist and his songs; “Popuzzle” – a jigsaw puzzle depicting a famous Pop music artist which the user must solve in the allotted time that is the length of one of the artist’s songs.

Once completing each game, the user is directed to the game’s High Score page, where he will view his own ranking and other friends and family rankings.

From there, the user can navigate back to the games screen and select another game to play, or back to the Homepage and select other actions, such as playing music, connecting with friends and more.

Wireframes

I created Hi-Fidelity Wireframes and kept them as simple and playful as possible by leaving lots of space for images and a minimum amount of text in order to make the app seem more game-like.

Final UI Design

Typography

Main Font – Avenir – I wanted a simple font, which is also round with soft edges in order to keep the general feeling of the app calming and fun.

Colors

I used Dark Red as the base color for the app in alignment with the app’s name, emphasizing the word “Jam”, and kept the other colors quite light for a more playful vibe.

Most users kept on playing with the app and its features long after the testing portion ended, meaning the app had an addictive quality to it, which is exactly what I was aiming for.

97% of users said they would download the app, while 73% said they would suggest it to friends and family. Most users mentioned there is a true need for an app such as this one, and would love to see it in app stores one day.
